In response to the request from Graham Roose here is what I found out during the tour in March
El Maiten – there were 3 Baldwins in and around the works, according to our guide Luiz these were 1,6 & 16. This would align with locos that have been reported as working in the last few years but we did not see:
- one was in the workshop, complete but minus it’s cab
- one set of frames & a bolier were outside the boiler shop
- one set of frames (slightly damaged) were outside the works and a boiler was being retubed inside the boiler shop
105 was also outside the works minus cab but largely complete, so a potential runner
Dumped behind Works – 2 x Baldwin & 3 x Henschel including 135, plus 3 boilers
Dumped around old running shed – parts of around 12 locos
131 is plinthed in town
Esquel
107 is dumped in station (but is smart)
Nahuel Pan
Unidentified Henschel dumped
Ing Jacobacci
3, 19 & 104 Serviceable plus a dumped Henschel. 138 plinthed in town
Overall these totals would seem to correspond with the quantity of locos reported in the book by Taylorson, and even in his 1992 DVD, Nick Lera reported that only 6 locos were serviceable. I dont think they ever had the 75 locos which one tour operator is currently advertising!
Hope that this helps a little.
Kind Regards
Bryan Acford

22|Aug|2012 2I have a reply from someone in Patagonia via my Flickr site to say that the Loco dumped at the side of the shed at Ing.Jacobacci is Henschel 150 which is destined for the national Railway Musuem.
Best Regards,
Graham Roose.
